Duckling Awards

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

'I Can' Awards

  • I can enter the water safely
  • I can enter turn return
  • I can jump in
  • I can swim a few strokes
  • I can float on my front
  • I can roll over
  • I can exit safely
  • I can float on my back
  • I can blow bubbles

Discovery Duckling 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Enter the water safely and comfortably fully supported by an adult
  • Bob up and down in the water with full adult support in a vertical position
  • Complete an adult supported horizontal back float with a return to vertical position
  • Be at ease with water being poured on the back of head.
  • With full adult support move smoothly though the water in the vertical position.

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Enter the water safely and comfortable fully supported by an adult.
  • Float on the back with full adult support. (Adult should be at the side of the child and able to maintain eye contact).
  • Splash hands in the water.
  • Adult to move in a 360 degree turn holding child facing away from them. First close to them, then at arm’s length.
  • Move through the water in a streamlined position on their back with full support from an adult.
  • Be at ease with face being washed/splashed.
  • With full adult support move smoothly through the water in the vertical position.
  • Travel on front or back with full adult support.
  • Make progress towards holding the side of the pool with adult support.
  • Exit the water safely with adult support.

Discovery Duckling 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  • Enter the water safely supported by an adult. Swimmers should be encouraged to sit on the side and wait for adult instruction.
  • Float on the back with full adult support behind the head, shoulders and hips.
  • Reach and grab toys on the water surface.
  • Rotate 180 degrees either horizontally and vertically with adult support.
  • Move through the water in a streamlined position on their front with full support from an adult.
  • Be at ease with water being showered over the face.
  • Travel on back using aids with adult support.
  • Hold rail/side of pool and move towards step/ladders with adult support and buoyancy aids.
  • Exit the water safely with adult supervision.

Discovery Duckling 4

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  • Enter the water from seated or standing position with full support from an adult and return to the wall/poolside.
  • Float on the front with aids and adult support.
  • Reach and catch toys on top of and under surface of the water.
  • Rotate 180 degrees either horizontally or vertically with minimal adult support using support aids.
  • Push away from wall with an adult holding them throughout the streamlined position
  • Be at ease wetting splashing own face and putting their chin in the water.
  • Travel on front using aids with adult support.
  • Hold rail/side of pool and move towards step/ladders with adult support and aids
  • Exit the water safely with adult supervision.

Duckling 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  • Make a supervised entry with adult support
  • Float on back with adult support behind the head without aids
  • Blow bubbles at the water surface
  • Wet the head without submersion
  • Kick 5m on the back with adult support
  • Travel without assistance 5m to a floating object
  • Entre the pool, rotate and return to the side with adult support
  • Exit the water safely with minimal adult support

Duckling 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  • Make a sitting entry with adult support if required
  • Using a buoyancy aid, rotate through 180 degrees without assistant
  • Submerge the face with confidence under adult supervision and without force
  • Blow an object for a distance of 2m
  • Travel 3m using arms and/or legs without assistance
  • Move 5m along the rail without assistance
  • Entre the pool. rotate and return to the side with minimal support
  • Exit the water safely with minimal adult support

Duckling 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  • Make a supervised jump to an adult with or without support
  • Float on front or back without adult support
  • Show a streamlined shape on the front or back when push off from a supporting adult
  • Blow bubbles with the mouth and nose underwater
  • Travel 5m on the front to the side of the pool without assistance
  • Kick 5m on the front holding a float (the adult may hold the other end)
  • Entre the pool, rotate and turn to the side without adult support
  • Climb out of the water with assistance if required

Duckling 4

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILLBE ABLE TO:

  1. Jump unaided, but supervised, into the water
  2. Show a mushroom or star float
  3. Rotate 360 degrees either horizontally or vertically
  4. Push and glide achieving a streamlined position on the front or back
  5. Submerge completely
  6. Travel without assistance 10m on the front or back
  7. Show a sequence to jump into the water, turn around, swim back to the point of entry and hold on to the side or rail
  8. Climb out of the water with assistance is required
