Award Outcomes

Stages 6 - 10

Stage 6

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Give two examples of how to prepare for exercise and understand why it is
    important
  • Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate onto Backstroke
  • Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Front Crawl
  • Swim 10m with clothes on (t-shirt & shorts)
  • Push and glide and swim front crawl to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  • Push and glide and swim breaststroke to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  • Push and glide and swim butterfly to include at least 3 rhythmical breaths
  • Push and glide and swim backstroke to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  • Push and glide and swim 25m, choice of stroke optional
  • Perform a "shout & signal" rescue
  • Perform a surface dive

Stage 7

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Push and glide and swim 25m backstroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Push and glide and swim 25m front crawl (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Push and glide and swim 25m breaststroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Push and glide and swim 25m butterfly (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Perform a movement sequence (linking skills with strokes and sculls) of a 1 min duration, in a group three or more, incorporating the following skills, Sculling head first, feet first, forward or backwards somersaults, log rolls, floating in stars, tucks, eggbeater with creative arm
  • Perform a sitting dive or dive
  • Push and glide and swim 50m continuously using one stroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Push and glide and swim 100m, using 3 different strokes (Perform to Swim England standard)
  • Tread water using egg beater action for 30secs
  • Complete an obstacle course (min 4 objects) with feet off pool floor throughout

Stage 8

 BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Complete a set lasting 400m (e.g. 16 x 25m) on a specific turnaround time set by the coach (e.g. 1.00min for each 25m)
  2. Swim 200m continuously using one stroke
  3. Kick 25m Backstroke with/without using a board - swimmers choice
  4. Kick 25m Breaststroke with/without using a board - swimmers choice
  5. Kick 25m Butterfly with/without using a board - swimmers choice
  6. Kick 25m Front Crawl with/without using a board - swimmers choice
  7. Perform a  Backstroke turn from 10m in to 15m out
  8. Perform a  Breaststroke turn from 10m in to 15m out
  9. Perform a  Butterfly turn from 10m in to 15m out
  10. 1Perform a  Front Crawl turn from 10m in to 15m out
  11. Refer to Swim England expected standards

Stage 9

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Complete a set lasting 800m (e.g. Either 16 x 50m; 8 x 100m; 4 x 200m) on a specific turn around time set by the coach (e.g. 1.30min for 50m; 2.45min for 100m; 6.00min for 200m)
  2. Swim 800m continuously choosing one stroke
  3. Swim a continuous 100m IM using legal turns
  4. Perform a 15m underwater kick on front in a streamline position
  5. Perform a Backstroke start then Butterfly kick in a streamlined position underwater until 10m from the start point (wall), transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of 25m
  6. 6Perform a Front Crawl start, underwater kick in a streamlined position until a minimum of 10m fro the start point (wall) is completed, transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of 25m
  7. Perform a Butterfly start, kick in a streamlined position until a minimum of 10m from the start point (wall) is completed, transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of the 25m
  8. Perform a Breaststroke start, perform a 1½ pull under water, transfer into stroke and complete the remainder of the 25m

Stage 10 

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO 

  1. Complete a set lasting 1600m (either 16 x 100m; 8 x 200m; 4 x400m) on a specific timed turn around set by the coach (e.g. 2.30min for 100m; 5.30min for 200m; 12min for 400m)
  2. Swim 1500m continuously choosing one stroke
  3. Perform a continuous 100m IM kick without using a kick board
  4. Swim a continuous 200m IM using legal turns
  5. Perform 15m underwater Butterfly kick on back or front in a streamline position
  6. Perform a Front Crawl relay take over – as an incoming swimmer
  7. Perform a Front Crawl relay take over – as an outgoing swimmer

 Challenge Awards 

Bronze Challenge

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

Section A – To be performed without pause and in this order

  1. To jump into the water of at least full reach depth
  2. To swim 10 metres, followed by a surface dive into the water of at least full reach depth and under water swim for a distance of 5 metres
  3. To tread water in a vertical position for three minutes
  4. To scull head first on the back for 15 metres, with the feet at or near the surface throughout

 Section B – To be performed without pause and in this order

  • To swim 400m using two strokes. Change of the stroke can only occur at the completion of a length of the pool.  A minimum of 100 metres is to be swum on each stroke
  • To climb out of the deep end without assistance

Silver Challenge

By the end of this stage participants will be able to;

Section A – To be performed without pause and in this order

  1. To plunge dive in to the water
  2. Swim 100m in less than 3 mins using any stroke. Stroke can change at end of length
  3. Tread water for 2 mins. One hand behind back
  4. Swim 10m followed by 2 surface dives. 1 H/f & 1 F/F. Object to surface each time
  5. Scull 10m head first. 10m feet first.  Maintain horizontal position

Section B – To be performed without pause and in this order

  • Swim 800m: 400m front and 400m back.  Can change stroke every 50m
  • To climb out of the deep end without assistance

Gold Challenge

By the end of this stage participants will be able to;

Section A – To be performed without pause and in this order

  1. To plunge dive in to the water
  2. Swim 100m in less than 2 ½ mins using 2 stroke.  Stroke can change every 50m
  3. Tread water for 3 mins. One hand raised out of the water. Can change upto 5 times
  4. Scull 10m head first. Tuck position 360 turn. 10m feet first.  Maintain horizontal position
  5. To swim 10m. Forward somersault and continue to swim 10m.

Section B – To be performed without pause and in this order

  • Swim 800m: 3 strokes min 200m per stroke.  Can change stroke every 100m. Time 25 minutes
  • To climb out of the deep end without assistance

Honours Challenge

 By the end of this stage participants will be able to;

Section A – To be performed without pause and in this order

  1. Straddle entry. Swim 5m into piked surface dive pick up brick 2kg.  Carry object for 20m and land on pool side
  2. Scull 10m H/F. Back somersault finish on back.  Roll over to front.  Forward somersault finish on front.  Tuck through legs to lay on back.  Scull 15m F/F.

Section B – 3 and 4 must be completed in 20 minutes

  1. Swim 200m F/C. 200m Back/C. Either 100m Br/S or 50m Fly.  Change can occur after 100m
  2. Swim 500m Freestyle – must complete 2 H/F and 2 F/F surface dives and swim through two hoops 4 metre apart without surfacing.

 

Rookie awards

Rookie Bronze 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Enter shallow water safely and confidently, swim continuously for 25m
  • Tread water for 1 minute in deep water, using your arms to occasionally signal for help
  • Continue to swim 25m continuously doing lifesaving backstroke
  • Using a buoyancy aid hold the HELP position for 1 minute
  • Holding the buoyancy aid kick legs for 15m to the poolside
  • Climb out of deep water without using the steps
  • Demonstrate a non-swimmer
  • Demonstrate a weak swimmer
  • Demonstrate an injured swimmer
  • Demonstrate an unconscious casualty

Rookie Bronze 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Demonstrate a ‘shout and signal’ rescue to a casualty 5m away
  • Throw a buoyant aid to a casualty 5m away and instruct the partner to kick to the edge
  • Enter deep water safely & confidently
  • Swim continuously in clothing for 50m (long sleeved top, trousers or a skirt)
  • Tread water for 1 min then turn around 180°using your arms to signal for help (occasionally)
  • Continue to swim 50m continuously doing lifesaving backstroke
  • Scull head first on your back (hands and feet together at the surface) a distance of 10m
  • Using a buoyancy aid hold the HELP position for 2 minutes
  • Holding the buoyant and kick legs for 25m to the poolside
  • Climb out if deep water without using the steps

Rookie Bronze 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Demonstrate a reach and rescue to a casualty 2m away
  • Throw a non-buoyant aid to a casualty 8m away
  • Enter shallow buoyant aid to the casualty 5m away.  Throw a buoyant aid to the casualty.  Instruct the casualty to kick their legs to the side.  Instruct your casualty how to exit the water without using the steps.
  • Enter deep water safely and confidently.  Swim continuously in clothing (long sleeved top, trousers or a skirt) for 50m
  • Tread water for 1 minute, then move backwards through the water 2m sideways to the left 2m then sideways right for 2m.  Use your arms to signal for help.
  • Swim 50m continuously lifesaving backstroke with your head out of the water then, using a buoyant aid hole the HELP position for 2 minutes 30 seconds
  • Remove additional clothing
  • Scull feet first on your back for 15m and 15 head first with hands and feet close to the water surface

    Perform a feet first surface dive and swim underwater 5m before surfacing

    1Climb out in deep water without the use of the steps

Rookie Silver 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Throw buoyancy aid 5m away
  2. Demonstrate reach and rescue 2m away, and instruct them what to do
  3. Throw a non buoyant aid to a casualty 8m away (rope)
  4. Entre shallow water, wade out 5m reaching aid walk back to edge instructing
  5. Help casualty out without the steps
  6. Entre deep water safely and confidently
  7. Swim total of 100m in cloths front and back
  8. Tread water 1 minutes 30 seconds. Move back 2m, rt side 2m, lt side 2m, arms signal 30 second intervals
  9. Swim 10m head out. HELP position for 2minutes
  10. Remove clothing
  11. Feet first surface dive recover object 1m of water
  12. Climb out unaided

Rookie Silver 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Throw buoyancy aid 8m away
  2. Coil and throw a rope 10m away in less than 1 minute
  3. Entre shallow water, wade out 8m reaching aid and tow to side
  4. Help casualty out without the steps
  5. Straddle entry
  6. Swim total of 150m in cloths front and back
  7. Tread water 2 minutes move 5m back, sideways right 5m, sideways left 5m
  8. Swim 20m head out
  9. Remove clothing then swim 50m, perform F/F and H/F surface dive pick up brick
  10. Climb out unaided

Rookie Silver 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Throw buoyancy aid 8m away. Instruct casualty what to do
  1. Coil and throw a rope 10m away in less than 45 seconds
  2. Entre shallow water, wade out 8m reaching aid and tow to side. Using a throwing aid instruct the casualty what to do.  Slowly tow to the side
  3. Entre shallow water, wade out 8m reaching aid and tow to side. Using a ridid aid instruct the casualty what to do.  Slowly tow to the side
  4. Place the casualty in support position
  5. Help your casualty out of shallow water without the steps
  6. In shallow water turn a face down unconscious casualty face up and walk to the poolside whilst shouting for help
  7. Using initiative assist 1 casualty in difficulty up to 5m away
  8. Demonstrate a fall in entry into clear deep water
  9. Swim total of 200m in cloths front and back in less than 10 minutes
  • Tread water 3 minutes shouting for help every 30 seconds

Rookie Gold 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Coil and throw a rope 10m away in less 35 seconds
  2. Entre shallow water and wade to a casualty 8m away using a pole, Demonstrate a non contact rescue. Instruct the casualty what to do. Place I support position then assist to land from deep water
  3. Demonstrate any 2 from the following in clear water: fall in, compact jump, shallow dive
  4. Swim 50m continuously in clothing to a conscious weak swimmer, head up and giving instruction. Tow the casualty 25m to a point of support using a non contact tow, in less than 3 minutes.  Using a support position, assist the casualty to land
  5. Swim 10m then demonstrate a reverse
  6. Swim 10m then demonstrate a Standoff
  7. Swim 20m to an unconscious casualty. Surface dive to recover an object from 1m of water.  At the surface swop the object for an unconscious casualty.  Turn the casualty over then perform a swim and tow for 20m using a side stroke returning to shallow water.  Timed swim 2 minutes and 30 seconds.  Shout for help
  8. Demonstrate supported rescue breathing whilst waiting for help
  9. Swim 400m continuously including lifesaving strokes
  10. Using initiative assist 2 casualties in difficulty up to 10m away form the side

Rookie Gold 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Swim 400m in clothing use 3 different strokes each stroke for 100m, in less than 15 mins. Tread water for 2mins remove clothing, swi 50m to deep water and climb out
  2. Swim 20m to unconscious casualty. Turn and tow 20m. shout for help assess breathing. Start rescue breaths for 1 min.  Put in to support for lift out.  Explain lift out.
  3. Swim 20m to unconscious casualty, Surface diva and swim 5m underater and retrieve an object.  Swop for casualty and cross chest tow to shallow water for 20m.Shout for help, all in 2 minutes
  4. Hand signals, attract attention, move to left and right, go further out, stay where you are, message understood, investigate object, return to shore
  5. Complete the Rookie Life support Award

Rookie Gold 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Swim 400m continuously in clothing using 3 different strokes. Each stroke must be performed continuously for a min of 100m in less than 15 minutes. Tread water for 2 mins then remove clothing, swim 50m to point in deep end and climb out
  2. Swim 20m head up in less than 25secs to unconscious casualty. Turn casualty and tow 20m.  Shout for help.  Assess normal breathing, start rescue breaths for 1 min, put in support position for lift out. Explain lift out
  3. Swim 20m to unconscious casualty. Surface dive, swim 5m underwater and pick up object.  Shout for help, swop object for casualty and tow to shallow end. In 2 minutes
  4. Using appropriate hand signals from land , attract attention, move to left and right, go further out, stay where you are, message understood, investigate object in the water, return to shore
  5. Complete the rookie life support award
