Duckling awards 1 - 4

Duckling 1

 BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Make a supervised entry with adult support
  • Float on back with adult support behind the head without aids
  • Blow bubbles at the water surface
  • Wet the head without submersion
  • Kick 5m on the back with adult support
  • Travel without assistance 5m to a floating object
  • Entre the pool, rotate and return to the side with adult support
  • Exit the water safely with minimal adult support

Duckling 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Make a sitting entry with adult support if required
  2. Using a buoyancy aid, rotate through 180 degrees without assistant
  3. Submerge the face with confidence under adult supervision and without force
  4. Blow an object for a distance of 2m
  5. Travel 3m using arms and/or legs without assistance
  6. Move 5m along the rail without assistance
  7. Entre the pool. rotate and return to the side with minimal support
  8. Exit the water safely with minimal adult support

Duckling 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Make a supervised jump to an adult with or without support
  2. Float on front or back without adult support
  3. Show a streamlined shape on the front or back when push off from a supporting adult
  4. Blow bubbles with the mouth and nose underwater
  5. Travel 5m on the front to the side of the pool without assistance
  6. Kick 5m on the front holding a float (the adult may hold the other end)
  7. Entre the pool, rotate and turn to the side without adult support
  8. Climb out of the water with assistance if required

Duckling 4

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Jump unaided, but supervised, into the water
  2. Show a mushroom or star float
  3. Rotate 360 degrees either horizontally or vertically
  4. Push and glide achieving a streamlined position on the front or back
  5. Submerge completely
  6. Travel without assistance 10m on the front or back
  7. Show a sequence to jump into the water, turn around, swim back to the point of entry and hold on to the side or rail
  8. Climb out of the water with assistance is required

Stages 1 – 7

Stage 1

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL, WITH OR WITHOUT AIDS, EQUIPMENT OR SUPPORT, BE ABLE TO:

  1. Enter the water safely
  2. Move forwards for a distance of 5 metres, feet may be on or off the floor
  3. Move backwards for a distance of 5 metres, feet may be on or off the floor
  4. Move sideways for a distance of 5 metres, feet may be on or off the floor
  5. Scoop the water and wash the face
  6. Be comfortable with water showered from overhead
  7. Move from a flat floating position on the back and return to standing
  8. Move from a flat floating position on the front and return to standing
  9. Push & Glide in a flat position on the back from the wall
  10. Push & Glide in a flat position on the front from the wall
  11. Give examples of two pool rules
  12. Exit the water safely

Stage 2

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Jump in from poolside safely to a minimum depth of 1m
  2. Blow bubbles a minimum of 3 times rhythmically with nose and mouth submerged
  3. Move from a flat floating position on the back and return to standing without support
  4. Move from a flat floating position on the front and return to standing without support
  5. Push from wall & glide on the back – arms can be by the side or above the head
  6. Push from wall & glide on the front arms extended
  7. Travel using a recognised leg action with feet off the pool floor on the back for 5m
  8. Travel using a recognised leg action with feet off the pool floor on the front for 5m
  9. Perform a tuck to rotate from a flat floating position on the front, to the back, floating position, then return to standing
  10. Perform a tuck to rotate from a flat floating position on the back, to the front floating position, then return to standing
  11. Perform a log roll from the back to the front
  12. Perform a log roll front the front to the back
  13. Exit the water without support

Stage 3

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Jump in from poolside and submerge to a min depth of 1m
  • Sink, push away from wall and maintain a streamlined position
  • Push & glide on the front with arms extended and log roll onto the back
  • Push & glide on the back with arms extended and log roll onto the front
  • Travel 5m on the front, perform a tuck to rotate onto the back and return on the back
  1. Fully submerge to pick up an object
  2. Answer correctly 3 questions on the Water Safety Code
  3. Push and glide and travel 10m on the back
  4. Push and glide and travel 10m on the front
  5. Perform a tuck float and hold from 3 seconds
  6. Exit the water without using the steps

Stage 4

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Perform a sequence of changing shapes (min of 3) whilst floating on the surface and demonstrate an understanding of floating (holding breath and blowing out, explaining what happens to them)
  2. Push & glide from the wall towards the pool floor
  3. Kick 10m Backstroke (on item of equipment optional)
  4. Kick 10m Front Crawl (one item of equipment optional)
  5. Kick 10m Butterfly on the front or on the back
  6. Kick 10m Breaststroke on the front (equipment optional)
  7. Perform a head first sculling action for 5m in a flat position on the back
  8. Travel on back and log roll in one continuous movement onto front
  9. Travel on front and log roll in one continuous movement onto back
  10. Push and glide and swim 10m, choice of stroke is optional

Stage 5

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Perform a flat stationary scull on the back
  2. Perform a feet first sculling action for 5m in a flat position on the back
  3. Perform a sculling sequence with a partner for 30-45secs to include a rotation
  4. Tread water for 30secs
  5. Perform 3 different shaped jumps into deep water
  6. Push and glide and swim 10m Backstroke
  7. Push and glide and swim 10m Front Crawl
  8. Push and glide and swim 10m Breaststroke
  9. Push and glide and swim 10m Butterfly
  10. Perform a handstand and hold for a min of 3secs
  11. Perform a forward somersault
  12. Demonstrate an action for getting help

Stage 6

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Give two examples of how to prepare for exercise and understand why it is important
  1. Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate onto Backstroke
  2. Sink, push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Front Crawl
  3. Swim 10m with clothes on (t-shirt & shorts)
  4. Push and glide and swim front crawl to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  5. Push and glide and swim breaststroke to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  6. Push and glide and swim butterfly to include at least 3 rhythmical breaths
  7. Push and glide and swim backstroke to include at least 6 rhythmical breaths
  8. Push and glide and swim 25m, choice of stroke optional
  9. Perform a "shout & signal" rescue
  10. Perform a surface dive

Stage 7

BY THE END OF THIS STAGE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  1. Push and glide and swim 25m backstroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  2. Push and glide and swim 25m front crawl (Perform to Swim England standard)
  3. Push and glide and swim 25m breaststroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  4. Push and glide and swim 25m butterfly (Perform to Swim England standard)
  5. Perform a movement sequence (linking skills with strokes and sculls) of a 1 min duration, in a group three or more, incorporating the following skills, Sculling head first, feet first, forward or backwards somersaults, log rolls, floating in stars, tucks, eggbeater with creative arm
  6. Perform a sitting dive or dive
  7. Push and glide and swim 50m continuously using one stroke (Perform to Swim England standard)
  8. Push and glide and swim 100m, using 3 different strokes (Perform to Swim England standard)
  9. Tread water using egg beater action for 30secs
  10. Complete an obstacle course (min 4 objects) with feet off pool floor throughout
